Sinatra: Frank and Friendly by Terry O’Neill
Edited by Robin Morgan
Published by Evans Mitchell Books
Frank Sinatra is a truly iconic legend and few photographers worked more closely with him than Terry O’Neill.
O’Neill is one of the finest photographers Britain has ever produced. His photographs have hung in national museums and art galleries worldwide and appeared on the covers of every magazine in the world.
In a relationship that spanned 3 decades Terry O’Neill earned Sinatra’s trust and, with his discerning eye, captured some of the most intimate and personal photographs of him.
This unrivalled access to Sinatra at work, rest and play allowed O’Neill to capture the real Frank Sinatra.
Sinatra: Frank and Friendly takes us behind the scenes of Sinatra’s incredible journey of fame. The superstar of music and movies let O’Neill’s camera follow his every move, on the road, at home and backstage.
The book draws on hundreds of images, many of them never published before, from O’Neill’s personal and private archive. Together with O’Neill’s personal memories of the times they spent together, Sinatra: Frank and Friendly, is O’Neill’s personal homage to the man and his music.
In an age of paparazzi, doorstep photography and big-budget publicity shoots, O’Neill’s fascinating insights of his relationship with Sinatra remind us that there once was a time when celebrities weren’t just brands to be exploited and that the stars and their audience were once intimate and inseparable.
Terry O’Neill has been hailed as perhaps the greatest chronicler of fame for over 40 years. In the 60’s he captured the cultural emancipation of music, fashion and movies before moving to Hollywood where he quickly established himself as the first choice photographer of film stars, directors, producers and magazine editors. He revolutionised portraiture and pioneered reportage celebrity photography. He created Bond film posters, Versace fashion campaigns and backstage photojournalism. His iconic images are included in international art collections and sell widely on the fine-art market. He lives in London and continues to work on both sides of the Atlantic.
Robin Morgan is a journalist and author. A former investigative journalist, foreign correspondent and award winning reporter, he is currently enjoying a second term as the Editor of the acclaimed Sunday Times Magazine. He is a former Director Designate of Readers’ Digest Books and the author of six books, including The Book of Movie Biographies.
Sinatra: Frank and Friendly will be published in October 2007 and will be available from all good book retailers priced £30.
