Kingfisher Tales from the Halcyon River by Charlie Hamilton James
Published by Evans Mitchell Books
Charlie Hamilton James has been obsessed with Kingfishers since he was six. This obsession led him to become Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year for two years running, and subsequently one of the world’s leading wildlife film makers and photographers.
Kingfisher: Tales from the Halcyon River is not just a book about this dazzlingly attractive bird but is a testament to the skill and dedication of Charlie Hamilton James.
The Kingfisher is a bewitching bird, strikingly beautiful in colour and elegant in profile, but it is also hard to spot due to its shy nature and fast flight. It is notoriously difficult to photograph, and so the amazingly intimate photographs in this book make it truly unique.
The book explores the Kingfishers’ habits season by season and provides you with a fascinating insight into its behaviours, much of which has not yet appeared in scientific papers. The text is written in diary form which draws you into the life of these birds and the real experiences of being a professional wildlife photographer, allowing you to share the frustrations, disappointments and joys of the author.
Simon King, who provides the forward for this book, says “Charlie possesses a quality that sets him apart from most mortals. For when most of us have thrown in the towel due to bad weather, bad luck or just sheer exhaustion, he goes on, determined to see the unseen, to reveal the unexpected, to witness the unique.”
During the course of the book you witness Kingfishers courting and mating, rearing their chicks, hunting and defending a territory. Charlie’s skills as a film-maker are also apparent in his photography – his shots of Kingfishers diving make you believe you are watching them in motion.
Charlie Hamilton James has been filming and photographing wildlife for most of his life. He is particularly passionate about kingfishers and otters and has become and authority on both. He has won numerous international awards for his work, including Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year in both 1990 and 1991, and Best Cinematography at Wildscreen 2004. In 2007 he was nominated for a BAFTA and won the prestigious Royal Television Society award for Cinematography. He is married to TV presenter Philippa Forrester and runs Halcyon Media, a production company specializing in natural history films for television.
