No Monkeys Like Snow Monkeys

Snow Monkeys by Heather Angel
Published by Evans Mitchell Books
Snow Monkeys is a wonderful book filled with 130 amazing and unique photographs of these loveable monkeys together with lively and interesting text revealing how they live and behave throughout the year.
Japan’s iconic monkey – the Japanese macaque – is more affectionately known as the snow monkey because they live in the Japanese Alps, where snow blankets the ground for most of the winter. They are the northern-most primate in the world and have become a huge tourist attraction.
Snow monkeys have been extensively researched and are known to be highly intelligent. For example, they are the only animal, other than humans and raccoons, which are known to wash food before eating it. In this book Heather Angel captures and documents this and many other characteristic behaviours including bathing in the natural thermal pools, grooming rituals, youngsters playing with snowballs and heartwarming shots of newborns with their mothers.
Heather Angel has travelled to Japan 5 times to capture snow monkeys in different seasons, and says “I have invested more time photographing snow monkeys than any other primate.” This is clearly seen from the stunning selection of photographs in the book. She adds “Nowhere else can you take monkeys in hot water with snow on their heads – this is the quintessential image of snow monkeys.”
This fantastic image has also inspired Heather to create her first haiku – Japanese brief verse that relates to nature – especially for this book.
Snow Monkeys is Heather’s 3rd title in the Wildlife Monographs series and will be available from 9th April at all good book stores priced £9.99 or from the publisher’s website shown below.
Heather Angel is a British biologist and award-winning wildlife photographer who constantly traverses the globe in search of pictures. She has made many trips to Japan specifically to photograph snow monkeys in different seasons. Her passion for nature culminated in a zoology degree at Bristol University. Whilst working as a marine biologist she became hooked on photography and for more than a quarter of a century she has been at the forefront of wildlife photography in Britain.
